Overview
Walk On is the 4th studio album by American rock band Boston, released on June 7, 1994, through MCA Records. It marked the band's first album in eight years, following 1986’s Third Stage, and notably, the first without original lead vocalist Brad Delp on primary vocals. In his place, Fran Cosmo took over most of the vocal duties, though Delp still contributed background vocals and co-wrote some songs.
Despite lineup changes and the shifting musical landscape of the early '90s, Walk On stayed true to Boston’s signature blend of polished guitar harmonies, spacey soundscapes, and melodic rock anthems. It debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and achieved platinum status in the U.S.

Why You Should Listen
Walk On keeps Boston’s trademark sound alive with soaring guitars, rich harmonies, and Tom Scholz’s meticulous production. The standout track “I Need Your Love” became a radio favorite, and the multi-part instrumental and title suite (“Walk On,” “Get Organ-ized,” “Walk On (Some More)”) is a tour de force of Scholz's progressive rock sensibilities and musicianship.
Fran Cosmo’s powerful vocals bring a new flavor to Boston’s sound, while the emotional core remains intact. It’s a worthy successor in Boston’s catalog, particularly for fans of guitar-driven melodic rock.
Fun Facts & Trivia
🎸 A Delayed Return: The album was mostly recorded in the early '90s but delayed due to legal issues and Tom Scholz's perfectionist approach.
🎸 Fran Cosmo’s Debut: Former Orion the Hunter frontman Fran Cosmo impressed Scholz with his vocal range, making him a fitting replacement for Delp on most lead vocals.
🎸 Still Delp’s Spirit: Despite not singing lead, Brad Delp still co-wrote “Magdalene” and contributed backing vocals, making Walk On feel like a passing of the torch rather than a full departure.
🎸 Environmental Themes: Scholz, known for his engineering background and environmental advocacy, infused parts of the album with themes of unity and sustainability – especially in the lyrics and artwork.
A New Chapter in Boston’s Legacy
While Walk On didn’t achieve the same explosive impact as Boston’s earlier records, it represents a mature, refined evolution of the band’s sound. It’s a rock-solid listen for longtime fans and a testament to Tom Scholz’s vision, even in a rapidly changing musical world.
