Soundgarden – Biography, Discography, Fun Facts & Trivia

Soundgarden formed in Seattle in 1984 and became one of the pioneering bands of the grunge movement alongside Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains.

The band’s classic lineup consisted of:

  • Chris Cornell (vocals, rhythm guitar)
  • Kim Thayil (lead guitar)
  • Ben Shepherd (bass)
  • Matt Cameron (drums)

Initially emerging from the underground Seattle scene, Soundgarden signed with Sub Pop and later became the first grunge band to sign with a major label (A&M Records).

Their breakthrough came in the early 1990s with global success, but internal tensions led to their breakup in 1997. The band reunited in 2010 and remained active until the tragic death of Chris Cornell in 2017, which effectively ended the band.
