Temple of the Dog – Temple of the Dog (1991)
Temple of the Dog is the only studio album by the Seattle supergroup Temple of the Dog, released on April 16, 1991, via A&M Records. The project was formed by Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) as a tribute to his close friend Andrew Wood, lead singer of Mother Love Bone, who died of a heroin overdose in March 1990 at age 24.
Though initially a modest release, the album became a major success in 1992 following the global breakthrough of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, whose members comprised the band.

Background & Formation
After Andrew Wood’s death, Chris Cornell wrote two songs in his honor: “Say Hello 2 Heaven” and “Reach Down.” These songs became the foundation of the project. Cornell teamed up with former Mother Love Bone members:
-
Stone Gossard (guitar)
-
Jeff Ament (bass)
They were soon joined by:
-
Mike McCready (lead guitar)
-
Matt Cameron (drums, Soundgarden)
At the time of recording, Gossard, Ament, and McCready were forming a new band — soon to be known as Pearl Jam. A young Eddie Vedder, who had just arrived in Seattle, ended up contributing vocals to one track.
The album was not originally intended as a commercial project but as a one-off tribute to Andrew Wood.
