🌑 Sound & Style
The album carries echoes of:
-
Nick Cave
-
The Doors
-
Joy Division
But Madrugada never sounds derivative. The production is spacious and nocturnal. Guitars feel windswept, basslines pulse slowly and deliberately, and Høyem’s voice dominates with restrained intensity.
“Majesty” became the breakthrough track — dramatic, minimal, and emotionally devastating.

Madrugada – Biography, Members, Discography, Ratings & Facts
Madrugada is a Norwegian alternative rock band formed in 1993 in Stokmarknes, Nordland, Norway. Emerging from a small Arctic town, the band became one of the most successful Scandinavian rock acts of the late 1990s and 2000s. Their sound combines alternative rock, blues influences, post-punk atmosphere, and dark lyrical themes.
The classic lineup consisted of Sivert Høyem (vocals), Frode Jacobsen (bass), Robert Burås (guitar), and Jon Lauvland Pettersen (drums).
Band Origin
Madrugada was originally formed under the name Abbey’s Adoption in the early 1990s. The founding members grew up in the Vesterålen region in northern Norway. After relocating to Oslo and signing with Virgin Records Norway, they changed their name to Madrugada and released their debut album in 1999.
The band quickly reached #1 in Norway and built a strong following in Germany and Greece. After the sudden death of Robert Burås in 2007, the group completed their self-titled album and officially disbanded in 2008. They reunited in 2018 and later released new material.
Band Members – Detailed Biographies
Sivert Høyem – Early Life, Family & Career
Full name: Sivert Høyem
Born: 22 January 1976, Sortland, Nordland, Norway
Sivert Høyem grew up in Sortland in northern Norway. His father worked in education and his mother was employed in the public sector. He spent much of his youth in a rural Arctic environment, which has often influenced the themes of isolation and landscape in his lyrics.
As a teenager, Høyem was heavily influenced by American and British alternative rock. He moved to Oslo in the mid-1990s to study and focus on music. During the Madrugada years, he also began developing a solo career, releasing multiple solo albums.
Høyem has been in long-term relationships and is known to keep his private life relatively low profile. He has children and has spoken in interviews about balancing family life with touring. Outside music, he has expressed interest in literature and social issues.
Frode Jacobsen – Background & Personal Life
Born: 16 June 1974, Sortland, Norway
Frode Jacobsen grew up in the same northern region as Høyem. His early interest in music developed during his teenage years, influenced by punk and alternative bands of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Jacobsen moved to Oslo to pursue music more seriously. Beyond his role in Madrugada, he has been active in political and cultural discussions in Norway and has written opinion pieces in Norwegian newspapers. He has been involved in public debates concerning cultural policy and social issues.
He is married and has children. Jacobsen has balanced his family life alongside touring and recording responsibilities.
Robert Burås – Early Years & Tragic Death
Born: 12 August 1975, Sortland, Norway
Died: 12 July 2007, Oslo, Norway
Robert Burås grew up in northern Norway and began playing guitar in his teens. He co-founded Abbey’s Adoption, which later became Madrugada. His guitar style was influenced by blues rock and alternative rock of the late 1980s.
Burås was known among close friends as reserved but deeply dedicated to music. He lived in Oslo during the band’s peak years. In July 2007, he was found dead in his apartment in Oslo at the age of 31. His passing occurred while the band was working on what would become their self-titled final album.
The remaining members decided to complete the album in his memory before disbanding in 2008.
Jon Lauvland Pettersen – Early Career & Later Years
Born: 1976, Norway
Jon Lauvland Pettersen was part of the original lineup and played drums on the band’s early releases. After leaving Madrugada in 2002, he worked in other musical projects and later rejoined the band during the reunion period.
