HIM – Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights (2001): Album Review, Tracklist, Credits, Legacy & Trivia

Released on 27 August 2001, Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights is the third studio album by Finnish gothic rock band HIM. Following the breakout success of Razorblade Romance (2000), this record was meant to expand the band’s love metal sound but ended up being more polished and pop‑oriented, due in part to an extended and conflicted production process involving several producers.

The album marked a turning point for HIM by introducing new keyboardist Janne “Burton” Puurtinen and delivering a sound that blended gothic rock moodiness with more accessible melodies.

🎶 Sound & Style

Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights blends HIM’s gothic roots with a more radio‑friendly rock sound. Due to record label pressure to repeat the success of Razorblade Romance, the album adopted a cleaner, more melodic production, which divided critics and fans.

Thematically, the songs explore heartache, loss, longing, and devotion — hallmarks of HIM’s “love metal” aesthetic — with poetic lyricism and atmospheric arrangements.
