Green Day – Insomniac (1995)

Album Overview

Insomniac is the fourth studio album by American punk rock band Green Day, released on October 10, 1995 through Reprise Records.

Following the massive success of Dookie, Insomniac marked a darker, heavier, and more aggressive direction for the band. The album explores themes of alienation, frustration, anxiety, and disillusionment, reflecting the pressures of sudden fame and life on the road.

Although not as commercially successful as Dookie, Insomniac reinforced Green Day’s punk credibility while continuing to deliver catchy melodies and fast-paced punk energy.

Background and Recording

After touring extensively for Dookie, Green Day entered the studio with producer Rob Cavallo to record Insomniac.

The lineup for this album was:

  • Billie Joe Armstrong – vocals, guitar

  • Mike Dirnt – bass

  • Tré Cool – drums

The album was recorded in 1995, with a more aggressive sound, faster tempos, and heavier guitars than Dookie, showing the band’s willingness to experiment with darker themes while staying true to their punk roots.
