Green Day – Kerplunk (1991)

Album Overview

Kerplunk is the second studio album by American punk rock band Green Day, released on January 17, 1992 through the independent label Lookout! Records.

Building on the raw energy of their debut 39/Smooth, Kerplunk showcased more refined songwriting, stronger melodies, and tighter performances, while retaining the fast-paced punk spirit of the East Bay scene. The album became an underground success and helped establish Green Day as a prominent band in early 1990s punk rock.

Background and Recording

After the modest success of 39/Smooth, Green Day returned to 924 Gilman Street and local studios to record their sophomore album.

The lineup for Kerplunk included:

  • Billie Joe Armstrong – vocals, guitar

  • Mike Dirnt – bass

  • Tré Cool – drums

(Tré Cool replaced original drummer John Kiffmeyer, giving the band a more dynamic and energetic rhythm section.)

Recorded in 1991 on a modest budget, Kerplunk reflected the band’s growing confidence, blending fast punk numbers, melodic hooks, and early pop-punk sensibilities.
