🎨 Cover Art

The A Day at the Races cover echoes its predecessor A Night at the Opera but with a black background instead of white, and a metallic version of Queen’s crest centered on the sleeve — crafted from the band’s zodiac symbols, crowned with a phoenix motif. The art concept was realised by David Costa following ideas from Freddie Mercury and the band, and original artwork later became a rare collectible.

  • 🎹 No synthesizers: True to Queen’s early era, all sounds were created with traditional instruments and overdubs — no synthesizers.

  • 🌏 International touch: “Teo Torriatte” features verses sung in Japanese, a tribute to their Japanese fans.

  • 🎤 Gospel inspiration: “Somebody to Love” was inspired by gospel music, especially artists like Aretha Franklin.
