The BeatlesThe Early Beatles (1965)

A Classic U.S. Compilation Showcasing the Band’s Earliest Hits

Released on 22 March 1965, The Early Beatles is a capitol records compilation album issued exclusively for the United States market. Rather than a brand‑new studio album, this LP collected some of The Beatles’ earliest recordings — most of which originally appeared on the UK debut Please Please Me — and made them available in the U.S. now that Capitol had regained American distribution rights to these tracks previously held by Vee‑Jay Records.

📈 Chart Performance & Sales

The Early Beatles performed respectably in the U.S., though not as dominantly as some of their other Capitol LPs:

  • Peaked at #43 on the US Billboard Top LPs chart — making it one of the few official Capitol Beatles albums not to reach #1 or #2.

  • Certified Gold (RIAA) on 8 January 1974

  • Certified Platinum on 10 January 1997

Despite not topping the charts, the album sold steadily, benefiting from the enduring popularity of its songs and the ongoing Beatlemania craze in 1965.

🌟 Notable Tracks & Highlights

🎶 “Love Me Do”

The Beatles’ very first single and a cornerstone of their early sound, driven by John Lennon’s harmonica and a simple, catchy melody.

🎤 “Twist And Shout”

A raucous rock ’n’ roll cover that became one of the band’s most iconic early performances.

💕 “Do You Want To Know a Secret”

A Lennon–McCartney classic featuring harmonious vocals and melodic charm.

🧠 Did You Know?

  • Though it was released in 1965, the recordings date from 1962–1963, representing The Beatles’ formative years before they evolved into the artistic powerhouse of Rubber Soul and beyond.

  • The cover photo for The Early Beatles is the same image later used on the back of the UK Beatles for Sale LP.

  • Some tracks like Love Me Do and P.S. I Love You were originally released in duophonic stereo on U.S. pressings because true stereo masters did not exist at the time.

🎉 Fun Facts & Trivia

  • The album collected material that Capitol previously could not use because early Beatles rights were held by another label (Vee‑Jay Records). After Capitol won back the rights, this release consolidated those early hits.

  • The Early Beatles remains a collector’s favorite because it serves as a snapshot of the band’s earliest U.S. market presence.

  • The LP has been reissued multiple times on vinyl and CD, often as part of The Capitol Albums box sets featuring both stereo and mono mixes.
