...Famous Last Words... (1982) – Album by Supertramp
Introduction
Released in October 1982, ...Famous Last Words... is the seventh studio album by British rock band Supertramp. The album followed the enormous success of Breakfast in America (1979) and marked the final studio album featuring founding member Roger Hodgson.
While the album still achieved commercial success, it also reflected growing tensions within the band, particularly between Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson. Shortly after the album’s release and subsequent tour, Hodgson left the group to pursue a solo career.
Despite the internal conflicts, the album produced several successful singles and remains an important part of the band’s classic era.

Cover Art
The cover of ...Famous Last Words... features a simple yet symbolic illustration: a matchstick figure standing beside a burning match against a bright blue background.
The imagery suggests themes of finality, transition, and the end of a chapter, which unintentionally foreshadowed Roger Hodgson’s departure from the band.
The minimalist design contrasts with the more elaborate artwork of previous albums such as Breakfast in America.
Musical Style
The album continues Supertramp’s blend of progressive rock elements and polished pop production.
Musical characteristics include:
-
layered keyboard arrangements
-
melodic saxophone lines
-
polished studio production
-
contrasting songwriting styles between Davies and Hodgson
Songs like “It’s Raining Again” highlight Hodgson’s melodic pop songwriting, while tracks such as “My Kind of Lady” reflect Rick Davies’s love for vintage rhythm-and-blues and jazz influences.
