10,000 Maniacs are an American alternative rock band formed in 1981 in Jamestown, New York. Emerging from the early 1980s college rock scene, the band became known for their literate lyrics, folk-rock influences, and socially conscious themes.
Originally performing under the name Still Life, the group changed their name to 10,000 Maniacs—reportedly inspired by the 1964 horror film Two Thousand Maniacs!. Their early sound blended post-punk energy with jangly guitars and introspective songwriting, drawing comparisons to bands like R.E.M. and The Smiths.
